The marine reserve was created in 1975 to allow the study of marine environments and life in a natural and undisturbed place. It was built to allow researchers to examine the effects of human activity and climate change by making comparisons with the Hauraki Gulf. By having students directly interact with the nature, we increase awareness and encourage action and support for marine conservation.
A variety of habitats are able to be examined under water from rocky shores to deep reefs and canyons. Each habitat also harbors its own marine life which can be seen up close while snorkeling. From biology to geography, Goat Island is the perfect educational spot to experience first hand the wonders that make up the country known as New Zealand.
This is not a guided snorkel. Return transfer to Goat Island from Auckland and rental gear for your snorkel experience.
